A courtesy call by the Director General of the Laotian Ministry of Education

On April 9, a delegation led by Dr. Phonephet Boupha, Director General, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education from Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos) paid a courtesy call on President FUKUDA Hideki. Accompanying Dr. Boupha were Dr. Sikhamtath Mitaray, President of Champasack University; Dr. Soukkongseng Saignaleuth, President of the National University of Laos; and Dr. Khamphay Sisavanh, President of the Souphanouvong University. The meeting was also attended by Dr. HIROSATO Yasushi, Principal Education Specialist, the Asian Development Bank; Executive Vice President NAKAMURA Chiharu in charge of International Exchange; Dr. SURUGA Terukazu, Dean of Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies; and Dr. OGAWA Keiichi, Professor of Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies.
In the meeting, Dr. OGAWA explained the past relationship between Kobe University and Laos with a focus on the acceptance of Laotian students and several projects in which the Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies played an important role. Dr. Boupha then told President FUKUDA and Executive Vice President NAKAMURA that she sincerely hopes to see more Laotian students and researchers on the campus of Kobe University. In response, President FUKUDA expressed his intention to discuss the matter with relevant faculties and schools, especially with those in the fields of economics, education and agriculture.
The visit of Laotian educational delegation is expected to lead to further development of exchanges between Kobe University and Laos.
