A Courtesy Call by Deputy Minister of the Laotian Ministry of Education and Sports

On July 2, President FUKUDA Hideki received a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Ministry of Education and Sports of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), led by Her Excellency Ms. Sengdeuane Lachanthaboun, Deputy Minister. Accompanied by Dr. Phonephet Boupha, Director General for the Department of Higher Education, the meeting was also attended by professors at Kobe University: Professor INOUE Noriyuki, Executive Vice President in charge of International Exchange, and Professor OGAWA Keiichi, Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies.

At the beginning of the meeting, Her Excellency Ms. Lachanthaboun expressed her appreciation to President Fukuda for accepting staff/faculty members of the national universities and government officials of the Lao PDR and providing warm support throughout their study at Kobe University. Prior to the meeting with President Fukuda, Her Excellency Ms. Lachanthaboun gave a lecture at the Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies titled National Educational System Reform in Laos. She shared her impression during the meeting that she was deeply moved by an enthusiastic audience asking many questions and enjoyed lively Q&A session. Professor Ogawa then explained activities between Kobe University and the Lao PDR including internship which took place in the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Sports of the Lao PDR.

Kobe University and the Ministry of Education and Sports in the Lao PDR concluded the Memorandum for Matching Scholarship of the Strengthening Higher Education Project (SHEP) in 2012. Under this agreement, the graduate schools of Kobe University accept staff/faculty members of the national universities and government officials from the Lao PDR as regular degree-seeking students. Currently five Laotian students are studying at the Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies.
