The Faculty of Letters is expected to play an increasingly important role in the university by promoting a "renaissance" of human culture through humanities education in the 21st century. To this end, the Faculty of Letters was reorganized in 2001, focusing on and conducting both traditional and contemporary researches in humanities, at the same time establishing close ties with other realms such as natural, social, and medical sciences. It also aims at educating people awakening to new social values geared to extraordinary creativities, who could actively contribute to global community in the future.
The Faculty of Letters has 1 department (Department of Humanities) with 5 principal research groups, which are further divided into 15 areas. At the end of the first semester, first-year students are to declare their areas, in which they will study in the following years. (Since the number is limited, a selection test might be given.)
