Maritime Sciences is the interdisciplinary integration of various academic fields related to maritime affairs. Its objective is to understand many global issues involved in maritime activities on ships and on the open seas, including the issues of transportation, communication, information, energy and environmental protection. The goal of Graduate School of Maritime Sciences is to employ a scientific approach in a highly advanced manner that combines both natural and social sciences. Given this objective, the foundation that is built from the basic knowledge and sense of purpose acquired in undergraduate programs is critical. The school offers highly specialized instruction and guidance on research activities to foster creative researchers, educators, and highly skilled professionals who possess diverse global perspectives as well as problem-solving abilities.

To this purpose, Department of Maritime Sciences offers Master's and Doctoral Degrees Programs based on three divisions of research:
1. Maritime Management Science Division provides studies on maritime-oriented safety management and shipping systems, the international maritime industry, maritime administration including multinational partnerships and maritime regulations.
2. Maritime Logistics Science Division provides comprehensive studies on controlled transportation and logistic systems based on the analyses of system efficiency, safety, and environmental burdens. The division also includes studies on logistics information, and marine environment information from a systems and information engineering point of view.
3. Marine Engineering Division provides studies on diverse energy technologies in new-function materials and next-generation power systems, and the issues of energy utilization, environmental protection, and mechatronics technologies in marine-related machinery and structures including ships.
