Kobe University's research team, including its African counterparts, presented its findings at a special seminar in Paris, France on February 26, 2010. The research team was invited by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) Institute of International Education Planning (IIEP) to conduct the seminar as part of the IIEP seminar series.
The research was based on the analysis of education issues in Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, and Uganda under the theme of "Comparative Analysis of Quality of Education under the Universal Education Policy (UEP) in Sub-Saharan Africa" (Team Leader: Professor Keiichi Ogawa), supported by the international cooperation initiative of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan.
More than forty people, including education development specialists from UNESCO headquarters and IIEP, as well as H.E. Ambassadors from Ghana and Tanzania Embassies, participated in the seminar. It was during the Q&A session that the team realized the popularity of the UPE policy in Sub-Saharan Africa and the importance of this issue in international educational development and cooperation.
Prior to this, the research team shared their findings at an international seminar on February 22nd, 2010, in Kobe University's Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies (GSICS) to an audience made up of mainly Japanese. The team also presented their findings at the 54th Comparative International Education Society's Annual Meeting (international conference) in Chicago, USA on March 3rd, 2010. Both seminars were very well-received.
