About Our Exchange Program


Kobe University has concluded over 180 academic exchange agreements with overseas institutions in both Inter-University and Inter-Faculty/Graduate School exchanges. Under these agreements, Kobe University is conducting extensive educational and research exchanges with partner institutions. Among these are student exchange agreements with 100 institutions, which are made up of “Inter-University Student Exchange Agreement” and other student exchange agreements concluded by faculties/graduate schools.

1. Inter-University Student Agreement:

Inter-University Student Agreement aims at university-wide exchange of students. This section explains the Inter-university student exchange program, which is conducted by the Kobe University International Affairs Department.Kobe University has Inter-University Student Agreements with the following institutions:

Students of the above institutions are welcome to come and study at Kobe University under the Inter-University Student Exchange Program. The application process is carried out through their home university's International Office. This program allows the students to study at the faculty/graduate school of their choice for the duration of either one semester or one year. Application fees, matriculation, and tuition for the exchange students are exempted while they remain enrolled at their home university where they pay the tuition fees. Credits earned at Kobe University are transferable to their home university. At the end of the semester, Kobe University will send an official academic transcript to the exchange students' home universities. It is up to the home university to decide how many transfer credits the students will actually receive for the courses taken at Kobe University. Interested students should consult their home university's International Office for detailed information such as requirements for this program, deadline, etc.

2. Inter-Faculty Student Agreement:

The student exchange agreements, other than the ones listed above, are aimed to exchange students in specific faculties or graduate schools.Interested students should consult their home university’s International Office or relevant office.

What can students study at Kobe University as exchange students?


Most classes offered at Kobe University are taught in Japanese, which means daily homework, reading materials, and examinations will be given in Japanese. In order to be enrolled in and successfully complete regular courses, the students must have advanced-level of Japanese language skill.They will belong to one of the faculties or graduate schools that they applied for and are admitted to. Within each faculty/graduate school, they will have an academic advisor or a tutor to consult academic matters. After arriving at Kobe University, the advisor/tutor will meet the students individually and decide the appropriate classes according to the level of their Japanese language ability. If they were accessed as having an adequate Japanese language skill, they will be eligible to take any class without limitation, except for ones with pre-requisites. For those who take part in research activities, the language requirement will be determined on an individual basis depending on whether supervision in English is available in their field of interest.

If the exchange students were accessed as having not-enough Japanese language skill to take regular classes, they will be given an opportunity to enroll in Japanese language course offered by the International Student Center. There are 3 courses of 5 levels each.

The followings are the qualifications and conditions for exchange students according to the Memorandum of Understanding on Student Exchange between the students’ home universities and Kobe University:

1.

Students must be enrolled in their home university as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student, and is aiming to receive a degree from their home university after completing exchange study at Kobe University. Undergraduate students must have completed at least one year of undergraduate study at their home university at the time of coming to Kobe University.


2.

The purpose of study abroad is clear and concrete so that the achievement of their study and research at Kobe University can be expected.


3.

Students should have adequate Japanese skill in order to understand classes or conduct research in Japanese.


4.

Students must have GPA 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale for their completed undergraduate study at their home university.


5.

Students should have the basic knowledge and skills required for the classes they wish to take or conduct research at Kobe University.


6.

Students are expected to maintain good relationships with local students and faculty members of Kobe University and its neighboring community. At the same time, they are able to contribute to the development of continued exchange between Kobe University and their home university after their stay at Kobe University.

Application Procedure At A Glance (forms, deadlines, etc...)


This chart is applied for the Inter-University Student Agreements only. For information on the Inter-Faculty Student Agreements, please consult with each faculty or the international office of your home university.

1. Contact the International Office at your home university and get information on requirements and deadlines on the exchange program.

2. Apply for the exchange program through your home university.

Application deadlines are as follows:

For Spring Semester Enrollment (April – August): *November 1st*

For Fall Semester Enrollment (October – February): *May 1st*
Note: For exchange candidates applying for JASSO or HUMAP scholarship: April 10th

(*Late applications are accepted on availability basis. Please inquire to Kobe University International Student Exchange Division.)

If nominated as exchange students to Kobe University by your home university, you should submit application documents, translated into Japanese or English, to Kobe University through your International Office. Financial Statement


(Financial Statement is a very important document for COE screening. Please submit the documents that will prove the "Method of support to meet the expenses while in Japan (Section 26 of Application for COE)". Supporting documents may be:

1) Latest bank statement (more than 1,200,000 yen balance for 1 year stay at Kobe University as an exchange student) and a copy of the latest bank passbook, or

2) A certificate of employment of your financial supporter plus a certificate of his/her annual income.)

3. Acceptance

2months

After Kobe University receives the application documents from your home university International Office, it will be deliberated upon. If accepted, you will be informed within 2 months. Any questions concerning the exchange program, progress of screening, etc, please inquire through your home university International Office.

Kobe University will apply for your COE by proxy. It will be issued within 2 months after submission. (We cannot guarantee 100% successful result of COE assessment, but most cases it has been successful.)


4. Acceptance package

-COE (Certificate of Eligibility)
-Arrival Information Form, etc...

5. Apply for College Student Visa at a Japanese Embassy / Consulate in your home country before entrance.

When receiving the acceptance package, please complete the Arrival Information Form.

Kobe University will reserve accommodation for those who requested in the application form when your entrance is definite.
* PLEASE NOTE: Although the exchange students are given priority for the room allocation in the university dormitory, there is no guarantee.


6. Reserve an airplane ticket and purchase a traveler’s insurance. Please email/fax us the Arrival Information Form.

7. Board the airplane and head for Japan!!

8. Participate in New Student Orientation

* Please note that there will be 2 orientations that you should attend; one by your Faculty and the other by the International Student Center.

9. Classes begin.Enjoy your stay!!

Visit Academic Calendar

Available check-in date to accommodation is April 1st for the spring enrollment and October 1st for the fall enrollment. If you wish to come earlier, you will need to secure an accommodation by yourself.

Scholarships


1. "STUDENT EXCHANGE SUPPORT PROGRAM (SCHOLARSHIP FOR SHORT-TERM STUDY IN JAPAN)"

This scholarship is available for qualified international students accepted by Japanese universities or graduate schools under the student exchange agreement on a short-term (three months to one year) basis.

Students will be provided the following amount in Japanese yen:

Monthly stipend: ¥80,000 per month (up to 12 months) *Please note that the relocation allowance of ¥80,000 has been discontinued since the academic year of 2011.

This selection is done in two stages. In the first stage, Kobe University applies to JASSO based on the yearly plan of incoming students, and wait for a notice of scholarship quota. The second stage involves reviewing and selection of students by Kobe University from the submitted applications.

2. HUMAP

HUMAP (Hyogo University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific) is an international intercollegiate exchange program between universities in the Hyogo region of Japan and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region.

Eligibility: Students from HUMAP member universities
Duration: 6 months to 1 year

Students will be provided the following amount in Japanese yen:

Monthly stipend: ¥80,000 per month (up to 12 months) *Please note that the relocation allowance of ¥80,000 has been discontinued since the academic year of 2011.

Selection process is the same as the JASSO scholarship above.
