As most of you already know, Influenza A (H1N1) is spreading in Japan as in many countries in the world. Now, most of the patients who have been diagnosed with A-type flu are suspected as being infected with Influenza A (H1N1). Furthermore, simple diagnostic tests for influenzas are not reliable yet.
In case you have cold-like symptoms (fever, running/stuffed nose, sore throat, cough, headache, fatigue, joint pains, etc.) yet it has not been confirmed as A-type flu or Influenza A (H1N1) by a doctor, we ask that you assume the worst and follow the following guidelines.
- If you have cold-like symptoms, diagnosed with A-type flu or Influenza A (H1N1)
A.DO NOT come to classes or to work. Call the relevant division (Student Welfare Division within the Student Affairs Department, Personnel Division within the General Affairs Department, Student Affairs Section or General Affairs Section within your Faculty/Graduate School) and the Medical Center for Student Health to inform them of your condition, and stay home until you recover.
B.Stay Home Period should be seven days, counting from the day after you showed cold-like symptoms, or two days after your temperature returned to normal. Should you continue to show symptoms of a cold, stay home until all symptoms have disappeared.
C.To prevent the spread of the virus, try not to go out unless it is absolutely necessary (to buy food or go see a doctor). When you do have to go out, make sure you wear a mask and cover your mouth when coughing.
(DO NOT go to the extra-curricular activities or part time job, either !)D.Ask the Student Affairs Section of your Faculty/Graduate School or the professor in charge about the substitute for the practices or examinations performed during the period mentioned above.
- If cold-like symptoms appear once you have reached your class or office
Return home immediately and stay there until you recover. If you display severe symptoms, go to a hospital (call first).
- If you come in close contact with someone who has cold-like symptoms or contracted A-type flu or Influenza A (H1N1)
Check your state of health daily; take your temperature before going to class or work. If one of your family members is diagnosed with A-type flue or Influenza A (H1N1), wear a mask all day long for seven days as well.
- Taking part in off campus classes
A.On the morning of the class, check your physical condition. If you display cold-like symptoms, do not go. (Take your temperature at least twice in the morning. If your temperature is over 37.5 C, you have a fever. Even if the temperature is under 37.5 C, if it is higher than your normal temperature or you display other cold-like symptoms, DO NOT participate in the off campus class.)
B.If symptoms appear once you have arrived, inform the professor and stop your activity immediately. All other class members may continue the classes but be sure to check your physical condition carefully for a period of time.
C.The off school class will be cancelled if more than about 10% of the class display cold-like symptoms.
D.If the destination of the off class activity has a specific guideline for Influenza A (H1N1), be sure to adhere to that guideline.
E.If you do not know what to do, consult the Medical Center for Student Health.
- Taking part in extra-curricular activities
A. On the morning of the activity, check your physical condition. If you display cold-like symptoms, do not go. (Take your temperature at least twice in the morning. If your temperature is over 37.5 C, you have a fever. Even if the temperature is under 37.5 C, if it is higher than your normal temperature or you display other cold-like symptoms, DO NOT participate in the extra-curricular activity.)
B.If symptoms appear during activities, inform the Extra Curricular Activity Section / Student Welfare Division, stop your activity, and go home immediately. If you display severe symptoms, go to a hospital (call first). All other members may continue the activities, but be sure to check your condition carefully for a period of time.
C.The activity of the group will be temporarily stopped if more than about 10% of the members display cold-like symptoms.
D.If someone displays cold-like symptoms during training camp, the person in charge should cancel the camp immediately.
E. If attending a competition, and the organizer of the competition has a specific guideline for Influenza A (H1N1), be sure to adhere to that guideline.
F.If you do not know what to do, consult the Medical Center for Student Health.
- If someone in the dormitory has cold-like symptoms or is infected with A-type flu or Influenza A (H1N1)
The person will be moved to a separate room to avoid infecting his/her roommate. Call the Student Dormitory Section / Student Welfare Division. Try to keep all the dormitory rooms well ventilated. Everyone at the dorm, including those who came in close contact with the patient, be sure to check your physical condition carefully for a period of time.
