On July 15, Vice-Rector for International Relations Professor Alain Vande Wouwe from the University of Mons in Belgium visited Kobe University. Vice-Rector Wouwer met with Professor YUI Kiyomitsu (Executive Assistant to the President in Charge of International Collaboration), Professor TOMIYAMA Akio (Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering), Professor OHMURA Naoto (Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Engineering), Professor FUJII Minoru, Professor ISHIDA Kenji and Professor SAKAGAMI Kimihiro (all from the Graduate School of Engineering). Vice-Rector Wouwer gave an introduction to the University of Mons, and they discussed the expansion of exchange between the University of Mons and Kobe University.

The University of Mons is located in the French-speaking part of Belgium. It was formed in 2009 when the University of Mons-Hainaut merged with the Engineering Faculty of Mons. It is a comprehensive university with six faculties (including Architecture and Urban Planning, Medicine and Pharmacy, and Engineering Science) and three schools (including the Warocque School of Business and Economics and the School of Human and Social Sciences). Researchers at the University of Mons have already been involved in exchange with members of Kobe University.

During the meeting the participants had a promising discussion about the expansion of exchange between the universities and exchanged information on various programs such as the University of Mons summer school.

Belgium has been Kobe University’s base in Europe since the Kobe University Brussels European Centre was established. We look forward to further exchange with the University of Mons and other Belgian universities.
