On October 3, the Kobe University Graduate School of Economics held their sixth joint international symposium with the Bruegel Institute, a world-class Belgian think-tank. The Bruegel-Kobe University international symposium has been held every year since 2013 with the aim of strengthening the links between our institutions. The event has been highly evaluated by attendees as providing an academic space to deepen knowledge about the issues faced by Europe and Japan.
The sixth symposium was held on the theme of “International Trade and the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement”, and an international cohort gave presentations and prompted active discussions. From Japan the event was attended by Masahiro Nakata (Minister, Mission of Japan to the EU), Hiroo Inoue (Director General, Brussels Office, Japan External Trade Organization), Professor Tamotsu Nakamura (Dean, Graduate School of Economics, Kobe University) and Professor Yoichi Matsubayashi (Deputy Dean, Graduate School of Economics, Kobe University) and from Europe the speakers and participants featured government officials and think-tank researchers including Maria Åsenius (Head of Cabinet to Cecilia Malmström, European Commissioner for Trade) and Sebastien Jean (CEPII). The event was a great success, with each speaker providing new insights in their respective fields to a record 100 participants. The organizers have agreed to hold the seventh symposium next year, and we look forward to further strengthening our partnership with Bruegel.
