Event Overview

In his recent book White But Not Quite: Central Europe's Illiberal Revolt (trans. 『白人になれない白人たち』), Ivan Kalmar argues that Central Europe's illiberal politics are a reaction to the terms on which the region was admitted into the Western-led global order after 1989 - accepted, but never quite as equals, and subjected to a surge of Western prejudice in the process. Some Central Europeans respond by projecting onto those farther East the sense of secondariness they themselves experience from the West. Could Japan be seen as Western-but-not-quite in the same way? And do some Japanese similarly project onto neighboring peoples the secondariness they experience from the West?
